Devauden has become a hotspot for spotting one of Britain's most elusive birds, the Hawfinch.

The hawfinch is a red-listed species in the UK as the total population may number fewer than a thousand breeding pairs.  Nevertheless, during the past two years these relatively scarce birds have occasionally been seen at garden birdfeeders in Devauden.  Experts believe there may have been a influx of Hawfinches to southern Britain due to to poor seed crop yields in other parts of Europe.

Hawfinches can be identified by their size (they are huge compared to other finches), their large head and thick, triangular bill. They are predominantly a rusty, orange-brown, richer on the head and tail, with a dark brown back and a black patch around the base of the bill.
