First Customers Connected

On Wednesday March 20th, the BiGDiG project took a huge step forward when the first residents - in Devauden, Kilgwrrwg and New Inn - were provided with their brand new, superfast broadband connections. Service provider Spectrum Internet was on hand, installing routers as requested and testing each link to make sure that performance and reliability was as expected.

And what performance! Peter Kennington, one of the first connected, saw his broadband speed leap from less than 2 Mbps to over 50. Another early tester reported download speeds of over 70 Mbps and upload speeds of around 15*.

If this has whetted your appetite for a better broadband service - you may have submitted a grant application but not yet placed your order, or perhaps you've just been waiting to see some results before committing - then now is the time to get involved. Please see www.superfastmonmouthshire.co.uk and click the BiGDiG tab to find out how.

It is the stated goal of BiGDiG to bring a broadband service worthy of the name to Devauden and its surrounding communities, so it's particularly good to see the first installations already reaching places that other services could not reach! In the coming few weeks wireless connections and a hardware upgrade at the Wolvesnewton exchange will allow additional communities to be served.

Whilst not everyone will get - or even need - 60 or 70Mbps, its clear now that hundreds of homes are within reach of a really meaningful and worthwhile broadband service upgrade, and the village of Devauden itself, on the basis of results so far, has been propelled from a notorious slow spot to the top 5% of best connected communities in the UK!

We believe that's a huge endorsement of the investment in time and money from this community, Monmouthshire County Council and the Welsh Government.

We've all built something really good here. Go use it!

*These results are for the Premium VDSL service, the fastest service from the range of options offered by Spectrum, recorded within the village of Devauden.
