Cheque Presentation

On Sunday 6th February 2011 a cheque for £5645 was presented to the charity Children with Leukaemia at The Masons Arms pub in Devauden. The cash was raised at a series of events hosted by the pub over the Christmas and New Year period which culminated in a phenomenally successful auction on 8th January. The charity's representative Katie Martin gratefully accepted the cheque at the Masons Arms and thanked everyone involved in raising the money for their generous support.

The Masons Arms raises money for Children with Leukaemia every year and the New Year Auction became an annual event while Brian Phillips was the landlord. Sadly, Brian passed away last year and this year’s auction was organised by his son Simon. “It’s been a difficult year”, Simon said, “but I’m pleased we’ve been able to keep the fundraising going. The charity was very important to Dad. I know he would have been thrilled to see what a great night it was and to know that everyone pulled together to make it happen.”

Peter Phillips, Brian’s brother, added "The presentation of such a huge cheque to Children with Leukaemia was a fitting legacy, and a great memorial, to Brian. Brian's family is grateful for the efforts of everyone in the community. The Masons Arms is a family business that started in 1964 and we are all very proud of the fact that it was able to act as the conduit for so much money."

Speaking on behalf of the pub’s regular customers Peter Gardiner described the generosity of those at the auction: “It was nothing less than amazing - if not foolhardy; for example £20 for a bottle of Bucks Fizz, what can I say! It just about sums up the Masons Arms that between carol singing, the auction and other events we can come up with over £5,500 but all having great fun in the process. The success of this project is a true legacy of Brian Phillips now carried on by Simon, family and friends with great aplomb!”
