A BIG BANG FOR YOUR BUCK

by John Brooks

October 2009

Devauden’s Bonfire Night party on November 5th this year is guaranteed to end with a BANG as £2,100 of fireworks go fizz, bang, whallop into the night sky in just half an hour culminating in an Apocalyptic Warrior, a single firework worth £120.

Last year saw a record attendance and this year promises to be just as successful. Entry is free but donations to the village hall are welcome.

The successful formula is made up of a big bonfire lit at 6.30pm, fireworks from 7 to 7.30pm and a live local band, the appropriately named “Crash and Berney”, playing before and afterwards.

The traditional atmosphere of a village event is enhanced with mulled wine, burgers and sausages, hot roasted chestnuts, candyfloss, toffee apples and a well stocked bar. Children particularly seem to enjoy the floodlit playground.

This year the bonfire will be topped by a Guy Fawkes created by the local Scout troop. On Halloween Night, Saturday October 31st, the Guy will be paraded around the village on a quad bike raising money for the charity “Children with Leukaemia.” The organisers hope local people will donate today’s equivalent of a “Penny for the Guy.”

Village Hall Chairman John Rowlands said, “We aim to put on a traditional village fireworks night which is good value, good fun and raises funds for our village hall.”

Please note that visitors cannot bring their own fireworks to the party including sparklers, which are now illegal at organised events.
