A Fete to Surprise and Delight

June 2009

by John Brookes

There’s been a village fete in Devauden for as long as anyone can remember but it is only in recent years that it has regained the scale and diversity of former years.

This year the fete committee has excelled in putting together a traditional summer celebration on July 11th which is jam packed with entertainment and activities.

The list is impressive: A circus skills workshop, displays of gymnastics, a street performer called Amazing Wayne who juggles knives on a unicycle, two Morris dancing troops and Chepstow Brass Band providing music all afternoon.

On the Village Green there will be a countryside and farming exhibition of historic working machinery and equipment while behind the village hall they’ll be the usual mix of tug-o-war, egg & spoon, sack racing, local knowledge quiz and all the traditional stalls like Tombola, “Guess the weight of a cake” and a coconut shy.

Anyone wishing to join in with their own “table top sale” can hire a space for a fiver from Julie Layzell on 01291 650592

Visitors can try their hand at the activities of three clubs that thrive in the village – keep fit, table tennis and indoor bowls.

They’ll be fresh pancakes, an all-day BBQ and in keeping with a countryside fete – real ale, farmhouse Perry and Yarlington Mill which has been voted best cider in Britain by CAMRA. Made by Gwatkin of Herefordshire, the judges described the cider as “smooth and rich with a spirit aroma and taste that resonates with the taste buds to surprise and delight.”

The organisers are hoping they’ll be plenty left for the evening’s entertainment when popular local band Dragon’s Breath will be aiming to surprise and delight at a Barn Dance in the village hall from 8pm. Entry for this is £5.

Devauden Fete on Saturday July 11th opens at 2pm until 5.30pm. Entry is free.
